✂️ My Mental Health Journey
"Sometimes you've got to break before you rebuild."
After 10 years climbing the ladder in the financial corporate world, I thought I was doing everything right. I'd worked hard, earned the title, and wore the suit. But after a big shift in the business—and some heavy, personal stuff going on at home—it felt like everything was coming at me from every angle. There was no relief, no place to breathe. I was burnt out, drained, and mentally exhausted.
Then one day, I just snapped. My elastic band broke. It wasn't pretty, but it was real.
I spoke to my doctor, and they signed me off work to give me some space. That pause gave me time to ask myself the big question: what now? I knew I couldn't keep going the way I was, so I quit. I let go of the pressure and started thinking about what I actually wanted to do.
That's when barbering came into the picture. Something hands-on. Creative. Social. Something that had always sparked my interest. At the same time, I began therapy, and went on anti-anxiety and antidepressant medication. I started decluttering my head, working on my health, and slowly—very slowly—rebuilding.
It wasn't easy. The road was long and messy and scary at times. But now? I'm married. I've got two amazing dogs, a home, and a job I genuinely love. Sure, there are still bumps along the way. I still have off days, like anyone. But I've learned what tools help me, and I make full use of the support that's out there.
In my barbershop, it's not uncommon for men to open up while they're in the chair. And I get it. I've been there. That's why I'm always open about my own journey—because if hearing my story helps just one guy realise it's okay to talk, it's worth it.
Struggling doesn't make you weak. Staying silent does.
Speak up, lads. You've got more support than you think.
